SCS Phoenix Center Intensive (Suit) Therapy
SCS
Phoenix Center specializes in specific rehabilation techniques. Using
cutting edge technology, our clinic was formed to allow children and adults with
neuromuscular disorders, such as Cerebral Palsy, the opportunity to receive intensive
physical therapy that once was only offered in Europe. In the United States,
most individuals receive only 1 to 2 hours of therapy per week. We provide
60 hours of therapy to accelerate the person's skills in a short period of time.
Intensive therapy can teach an individual new skills in a short period of time that
continue to improve even after therapy is complete. This is possible through
the use of the TheraSuit, Universal Exercise Units and highly skilled therapist
who maximize the person's potential. We believe many individuals with disabilities
have so much potential. With the right combination of therapies, the participant
will be propelled forward toward greater
independence.
How Does The Suit Work?
The Suit is made up of a vest, shorts, knee pads and special shoes. They are
attached by using bungee type bands that are used to correctly align the body and
provide resistance as movements are performed. The main function of the Suit
is to improve and change awareness of where the body is in space, reduce pathological
reflexes, restore proper patterns of movement and load the body with weight similar
to gravitational forces while in correct alignment.
While in the Suit, the patient is put through a series of exercises targeting their developmental needs. They can be seen sitting, rolling, crawling, tall kneeling,
walking, performing sit ups, push ups and much more!
During the 60 hours, the participant will receive hot packs, massage, treatment
in the Suit, vigorous mat exercises, and exercises in the Universal Exercise Unit,
also known as the "cage".
The individual will engage in gross monitor activities designed to propel him or
her to the next milestone. Physical, Occupational, Speech and Massage Therapy
are available to ensure a well-rounded treatment. We get to know the individual
and take time to work on specific deficits that are inhibiting progress. Parents
and caregivers are encouraged to work together with the therapist in order to teach
them to continue the progress after the session is complete.
